The longer Vacation Bible School (VBS) session gives you more time to go through Bible class material than in a typical Sunday School hour. It’s a great idea to balance that time with a fun activity at the start or end of the class. Here are three middle school student approved ideas to get you started.
Post Summary
1. Tug of War
Since VBS is held in the summertime, kids will be excited to get outside and enjoy the weather. To make it more fun, mix up the teams with wacky combinations like five high school boys competing against 15 middle schoolers or students challenging a handful of leaders.
2. Photo Scavenger Hunt
Most of the church staff are around campus for VBS, so this is an opportunity to do a wacky photo scavenger hunt. Send the kids out in pairs or groups of four to take photos of the oddest items they can find on the church’s property. Give them bonus points for capturing class members playing air guitar with the worship pastor or doing disco moves with the children’s pastor. Now you have some great images to use as wall decor in the church’s youth group room.
3. Spaghetti Noodle and Marshmallow Tower
Split your tweens into groups of four and provide each with a pack of spaghetti noodles and a bag of large marshmallows. Give them a mission to build the tallest freestanding tower in 10 minutes. At the end of the time limit, measure each tower to determine the winning team. If you have a tie, have one member from each team transport the tower across the room for a second measurement, without letting them fix any parts that break off during the move.
