Few things on Earth are more precious than the Earth itself. Protecting the environment can sometimes seem like an uphill battle. If you want to help, here are five easy ways to make the environmental activists in your life jump for joy.
1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Lessen your environmental impact by revising your consumption habits. Try to only buy things that you need or genuinely want rather than miscellaneous clutter. When making purchases, opt for reusable products rather than single-use products. If you no longer have use for an item, recycle it appropriately, if possible.
2. Save Electricity (and Money)
Reduce your energy usage and monthly utility bill by simply unplugging electronic devices when you are done using them. Even if you are not actively using a plugged-in device, it still consumes “standby” electricity. Additionally, turn off your lights and television when you leave your home. This easy-to-forget task can pay off big time.
3. Conscientious Eating
To reduce food waste, plan your upcoming meals before going to the store. Once there, stick to your list. If you have leftovers after your scrumptious dinner, put them in the refrigerator rather than the garbage. Feeling particularly ambitious? Try gardening and use inedible food scraps as nourishing compost.
4. Alternative Modes of Transportation
Despite the recent popularity of electric cars and other “green” vehicles, vehicular carbon emissions remain a devastating source of pollution. Instead of driving your car to work, try walking, jogging, or biking. Doing so will save you money on gas, and your body will appreciate the exercise. If that isn’t possible, try carpooling or taking public transportation.
5. Conduct Brand Research
In a capitalistic society, it is impossible to avoid consumerism. However, there are ways you can buy responsibly. Before making a purchase, research the brand’s environmental practices. Are they sustainable? Great! Not so much? There is always a competitor who will do their due diligence when it comes to production, packaging, and shipping.
Being environmentally conscious doesn’t only benefit the planet we live on. Save money and take care of your health by getting into these eco-friendly habits.
